Anniversary of the Boston Tea Party December 16, 1773

On December 16, 1773, men gathered for what would become known as the Boston Tea Party.

Behind this historical event were members of the “Sons of Liberty”. The Sons of Liberty were formed in Boston around the time of the Stamp Act protests in 1765.

“The Sons of Liberty, a well-organized Patriot paramilitary political organization shrouded in secrecy, was established to undermine British rule in colonial America…”

The flag itself dates back to around the time of 1765 and originally it had 9 vertical stripes but was changed to horizontal stripes after being outlawed. The 9 stripes would grow to 13 stripes at the time of the Revolutionary War.

The Congress, by Public Law 103-308, as amended, has designated December 7 of each year as “National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.”

NOW, THEREFORE, The President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim December 7, 2017, as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. I encourage all Americans to observe this solemn day of remembrance and to honor our military, past and present, with appropriate ceremonies and activities. I urge all Federal agencies and interested organizations, groups, and individuals to fly the flag of the United States at half-staff this December 7 in honor of those American patriots who died as a result of their service at Pearl Harbor
