The flag of China, officially called the Five-star Red Flag, consists of a red background with five golden-yellow stars arranged in a vertical arc towards the left side. The large star on the left represents the Communist Party of China, and the smaller four stars on the right represent the four social classes identified in Mao Zedong’s “Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung”: the working class, the peasantry, the urban petty bourgeoisie, and the national bourgeoisie.

The red background of the flag represents the communist revolution and the blood of the revolutionary martyrs.
