The flag of Kiribati, a small island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, consists of a red background with a golden frigatebird flying over a golden rising sun. The sun has 17 rays, representing the 16 Gilbert Islands and Banaba (formerly known as Ocean Island), which make up the country.
The frigatebird is a national symbol of Kiribati and represents freedom, while the sun symbolizes hope and new beginnings. The red color represents the equator, which passes through Kiribati, and the nation’s position on both sides of it. The golden color represents the sun, wealth, and brightness.
The flag was designed by Sir Arthur Grimble, a British colonial administrator who served as the Resident Commissioner of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands (which later separated into Kiribati and Tuvalu) in the 1930s.
