The current flag of Yemen was adopted on May 22, 1990, when North Yemen and South Yemen were unified. It features three equal horizontal bands of red, white, and black colors, from top to bottom. The red band represents the bloodshed of the struggle for independence, the white represents a bright future and unity, and the black represents the dark past of Yemen.
