The original flag of the Confederacy, adopted by the provisional congress, and used from March 1861 until May 1863. It retains the basic design and coloration of the Union flag, differing only in the number of stars and stripes or “bars.” A star represents each of the seven states to have seceded before the attack on Fort Sumter and Lincoln’s response. The flags similarity to the Stars and Stripes caused confusion on the battlefield. Some felt that it was too similar to the Union flag, though many wanted to keep ties to the banner that waved over their forefathers. It was replaced by the Confederate Battle Flag, first in the army and eventually throughout the Confederacy.

Description

The “Stars and Bars” flag is the first national flag of the Confederate States of America, which was a breakaway government formed by several southern states during the American Civil War. The flag features three horizontal stripes, with two red stripes on the top and bottom and a white stripe in the middle. In the upper left corner of the flag, there is a blue square with a circle of seven white stars, representing the seven states that initially seceded from the Union.

The “Stars and Bars” flag was first adopted by the Confederate Congress in 1861, and it was used as the official flag of the Confederacy until 1863 when a new design, known as the “Stainless Banner,” was adopted. The “Stars and Bars” flag was also modified during its use, with different variations featuring additional stars in the blue canton to represent other Confederate states that joined the secession.
