City of Chicago Outdoor Nylon Flag

The design of the City of Chicago flag that we know today dates back to 1917 when Wallace Rice won a contest for his design submittal.  Wallace reflected back during that design time frame, “After more than four hundred designs had been made by me, I finally struck upon such a six-pointed star as had never appeared in any flag before, peculiarly and singularly a Chicago star, made by a Chicagoan for his greatly loved city, by an American in the tenth generation in this country, whose ancestors had fought against Great Britain, for the most American of American cities.”

From the Chicago Municipal Code of 1922, Chapter XXVII, Article I, 1020, “1017.  The Chicago Municipal flag.]  The Chicago of Chicago municipal flag shall be white, with two blue bars, each taking up a sixth of its space, and set a little less than one-sixth of the way from the top and bottom of the flag, respectively.  There shall be two bright red stars with sharp points, six in number, set side by side, close together, next the staff in the middle third of the surface of the flag.”

We feel that our “bright red stars with sharp points” are closest to what Mr. Rice had envisioned.  The first two stars where in reference to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893.  The third star was added for the Century of Progress Expo of 1933.  The final fourth star was added for the historical significance of Fort Dearborn in 1939.  The placement of the stars on today's flags is by chronological order.

Back in 2017 Robert Loerzel wrote an wonder article about the history of the flag, called “The Story of Chicago’s Four-Star City Flag”.  You can read his article here

Though manufacturing techniques and fabrics have changed since 1917, the principal is still the same.  Each of our stripes on our City of Chicago flags are individually sewn and each of our deep cut stars are carefully sewn into place.

Made to official design specifications, our larger outdoor municipal flags along with our boat and nautical flags utilize the latest in digital printing and sewing technology to replicate the most detailed of designs onto a 100% heavyweight nylon material that's durable and fast-drying.  Each flag is professionally sewn and finished with strong canvas heading with brass grommets.  Typical house sized flag is going to be 3' X 5'.   8' X 12' and larger flags are finished with canvas roped heading with galvanized thimbles on each end.

Presentation and ceremonial fringed display flags are typically seen within private and public office building entrances, within courtrooms, on grade, high school, or collegiate stages when they are hosting events or debates, or they are utilized in parades and color guard usage.  Each flag has flag gold fringe, lined pole hem sleeve, and 2 mounting tabs to attach to an existing flag pole.
