Description
The Jordanian flag consists of a rectangular piece of fabric with three horizontal stripes. The top and bottom stripes are black, while the middle stripe is white and broader than the others. These colors hold specific meaning for the country.
The black stripes represent the Abbasid Caliphate, a dynasty that once ruled the region and symbolizes the struggles Jordan has overcome throughout history. The white stripe represents the Umayyad Caliphate, another significant historical era for the country and represents purity, peace, and optimism for the future.
In the canton (upper hoist side) of the flag, there is a red triangular segment that extends from the top left corner down towards the middle of the flag. Inside the red triangle, there is a white seven-pointed star, which represents the seven verses of the first surah (chapter) of the Quran, Al-Fatiha, and symbolizes unity and faith.
